Odinkalu's Accusation: Malami's EFCC politicisation claim is a 'grubby, vexatiously political' act
Chidi Odinkalu, a former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has taken a strong stance against Abubakar Malami, the ex-attorney-general of the federation. Odinkalu's criticism stems from Malami's recent allegations that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is acting politically in its dealings with him.
In a public statement on X, Odinkalu described Malami's behavior as 'grubby, vexatiously political' during his tenure. He further emphasized that if Malami now believes the EFCC is politicized, he should acknowledge that 'they're following what he taught them'.
Odinkalu's post reads, 'Someone should tell Abubakar Malami to please sit this out. He was a grubby, vexatiously political Attorney-General. If he’s now complaining that EFCC is political, they should tell him that they’re following what he taught them. They have no need to deny it!'
This response comes after Malami accused the EFCC of revoking his bail due to his attendance at a political gathering in Kebbi state. However, the EFCC refuted this claim, stating that Malami had not met the five conditions attached to his provisional bail and that his allegations were 'untenable'. The commission also emphasized its apolitical nature and urged Malami to focus on fulfilling his bail requirements rather than making 'bogus claims'.
Malami, who is facing an investigation for 18 alleged offences, including money laundering, abuse of office, and terrorism financing, denied any default on bail conditions. Odinkalu's comments highlight a potential power struggle and the political implications surrounding the EFCC's actions.
